What Debate Classes is

Learners are given a side, often the one they disagree with, and taught to argue it honestly. It is the fastest way we know to teach a child that the other position usually has something in it.

Understand the other side well enough to argue it, then decide.

What they will learn

  • Construct an argument with a claim, evidence and reasoning
  • Anticipate the other side and answer it before it is raised
  • Take notes while listening, and reply to what was actually said
  • Speak to a time limit without rushing the ending

What the benefits are

  • Sharper reasoning, and writing that follows an argument through
  • Real listening, which is rarer and more useful than quick talking
  • Composure in disagreement, at school and later at work

How the 45 minutes run

  1. The motion, and sides assigned rather than chosen
  2. Preparation time in pairs, with the teacher prompting
  3. The debate itself, timed and structured
  4. Feedback on argument and delivery, separately
The lifetime objective

What they still have in twenty years

The habit of arguing a case on evidence and hearing the other side properly, which serves them in every exam, interview and disagreement afterwards.

Questions about Debate Classes

Who can join Debate Classes?

Anyone. Batches run at 4 to 6, 6 to 10 and 10 to 15, and adults have batches of their own, so a learner is placed by age rather than turned away by it. No prior knowledge is assumed: most learners start from nothing.

Is Debate Classes taught live?

Live, always, in a small batch with the camera on. A recording cannot hear a mistake and correct it, and that correction is most of what you are paying for.

When does Debate Classes run?

Saturday & Sunday, mornings at 9am and evenings at 8pm IST. We schedule around the learner's time zone rather than around Indian hours, so tell us where you are and we will place you in a batch that lands at a sensible local hour.

What will my child actually be able to do?

Construct an argument with a claim, evidence and reasoning; Anticipate the other side and answer it before it is raised; Take notes while listening, and reply to what was actually said. Beyond the syllabus: The habit of arguing a case on evidence and hearing the other side properly, which serves them in every exam, interview and disagreement afterwards.
