Live online classes in Fiji

Indian culture classesfor families in Fiji.

Sanskrit, shlokas, chanting, the Ramayana and the Gita, storytelling, public speaking, Bharatanatyam and yoga, taught live from India, in small batches, at hours that work in Fiji.

Indo-Fijian families trace their arrival to May 1879, when the Leonidas reached Levuka with the first indentured workers from India. From the languages those workers brought, Fiji grew a language of its own, Fiji Hindi, now one of the country's three recognised languages, and a child in Suva may speak it at home without ever having read it. What families write to us for is the older language underneath: the Sanskrit of the prayers, and the Ramayana that went to Fiji with the girmitiya. The clock is kind: Fiji is six and a half hours ahead of India, so the Indian morning batches land at 2:30 on a Saturday afternoon and 3:30 on a Sunday.

What families in Fiji can learn

Every class below is open to every age, and every one is taught live in a small batch.

Samskara Seeding

through Culture & Scriptures

The texts, the stories and the customs, taught so a child grows up inside the tradition rather than visiting it once a year. This is the track most families begin with.

Confidence Building

Voice, argument and presence

Speaking, debating and standing in front of a room. The skills that decide whether what a child knows ever reaches anybody else.

Art & Craft

Dance, drawing and making, in the Indian tradition

Classical dance, drawing, painting and making, taught through the forms and festival crafts this culture produced, including live online Bharatanatyam for beginners. Batches are opening now; timings are arranged with the families who join.

Yoga & Wellness

For kids, adults and seniors, and for the back and neck that ache

Live online yoga in small batches, taught by qualified teachers in the tradition it comes from. Separate batches for children, adults and older learners, and focused batches for what people actually come to yoga with: back pain, a stiff neck and shoulders, weight, sleep and stress.

Gita, sutras, chanting and song

Adult batches, taught at adult pace and without any assumption of prior knowledge. Most of these learners are beginners who never had the chance earlier, and evening batches are set with the group.

Questions from families in Fiji

My child speaks Fiji Hindi. Does that help with Sanskrit?

With the sounds, yes, and with a good deal of vocabulary. Sanskrit is written in Devanagari, which is taught from the first letter, and teaching is in English throughout, so a child who speaks Fiji Hindi but has never read it starts in the same place as everyone else, with a head start on pronunciation.

Is Fiji on one clock?

Yes. The 180th meridian runs through Fiji, but the whole country keeps a single time zone, so the times on this page hold in Suva, Lautoka, Nadi and Labasa alike.

What about the Indian evening batches?

They land in the small hours in Fiji, around 1:30am, so nobody here takes them. Fiji runs on the two weekend-afternoon slots.

What time are the classes in Fiji?

Our batches run Saturday morning IST (Sat 2:30pm in Fiji), Saturday evening IST (Sun 1:30am in Fiji), Sunday morning IST (Sun 3:30pm in Fiji), Sunday evening IST (Mon 2:30am in Fiji). If none of those suit, tell us the hours that do and we will build a batch around them. We schedule around the learner, not around Indian hours.

Do you have a centre in Fiji?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. Every class is taught live over video by teachers in India, and our office is in HSR Layout, Sector 2, Bengaluru. That is what lets a family in Fiji learn from a teacher who grew up inside this tradition rather than one who is the nearest available.

How do we pay from Fiji?

Fees depend on the batch and how often it meets, and we take international payments. Message us on WhatsApp for the current fee list in your currency. The 30-minute trial class is free, with no payment details taken.
